How brokerage charges actually work
Every trade in India is layered with six distinct charges. Brokerage is just one of them — the rest are statutory and identical across brokers.
What the broker keeps
Varies by broker and plan — flat fee, percentage, or zero on delivery. This is the only negotiable component.
Securities Transaction Tax
Government tax on every trade, fixed by the Finance Act. Identical across all brokers, non-negotiable.
NSE / BSE transaction fee
Levied by the exchange on turnover to fund market infrastructure. Same rate for every broker on that exchange.
Regulatory turnover fee
₹10 per crore of turnover, charged uniformly to fund SEBI's regulatory function.
State government levy
Charged on the buy-side value under the Indian Stamp Act, uniform pan-India since 2020.
18% on services
Applies only to brokerage + exchange charges + SEBI fees — never on STT or stamp duty.
