VWAP and anchored VWAP: the institutional benchmark, explained

VWAP is the price large orders are judged against. Anchored VWAP asks the same question from the moment that mattered — a results gap, a listing day, a breakout.

If you trade Indian equities intraday, one line on the chart is watched by every institutional desk in the market, whether you plot it or not. That line is VWAP — and knowing how it is built tells you when to trust it and when it is quietly wrong.

What VWAP measures

The volume-weighted average price is the average price paid for every share traded so far in the session, weighted by how many shares changed hands at each price. A thousand shares at one price count a thousand times more than a single share at another.

VWAP = Σ (price × volume) ÷ Σ volume

Summed over every trade since the anchor — for a session VWAP, since the 09:15 open. Many charting tools use the typical price (high + low + close) ÷ 3 of each bar; a tick-based VWAP uses each trade’s own price.

A simple moving average treats every bar equally. VWAP lets the market’s actual participation decide which prices matter, which is why it behaves like a fair-value line for the day.

A worked example

Five trades in an NSE stock in the first minutes of the session:

#PriceQuantityPrice × qtyRunning Σ(P×Q)Running VWAP
1₹2,450.00200490,000490,000₹2,450.00
2₹2,454.00300736,2001,226,200₹2,452.40
3₹2,458.00100245,8001,472,000₹2,453.33
4₹2,456.00400982,4002,454,400₹2,454.40
5₹2,452.005001,226,0003,680,400₹2,453.60

After five trades, VWAP is ₹2,453.60. The simple average of the five prices is ₹2,454.00. The difference is the weighting: the largest trade, 500 shares at ₹2,452, pulled VWAP down towards it. On a real session there are thousands of trades, and every one of them counts.

Why institutions care

When a fund buys a large position over a day, its execution is commonly measured against VWAP. Buying below it is good execution; buying above it is slippage. That turns VWAP into a level real money watches all day.

  • Above VWAP, the average buyer of the day is in profit and buyers are in control. Pullbacks to VWAP are often bought.
  • Below VWAP, the average buyer is under water and rallies to VWAP often meet supply.
  • Repeated crossing means balance: no side is in control, and VWAP signals lose their edge. A Market Profile of the same session will usually show a wide, balanced value area.

Anchored VWAP: choosing the starting point

A session VWAP resets every morning. An anchored VWAP starts from a moment you choose and runs forward from there, answering a sharper question: what is the average price of everyone who has traded since that event?

After a results-day gap, the long-running VWAP lags far below price. A VWAP anchored at the gap tracks the new buyers’ average cost and acts as support while the move holds.

VWAP bands

Bands drawn one, two and three standard deviations either side of VWAP show how stretched price is from the day’s fair value. In a balanced session, moves to the second band often revert towards VWAP. In a trend, price can ride the first band all day. The bands describe the session; they do not decide which kind of session it is — read that from structure and order flow.

The index VWAP problem

Here is the catch most traders never notice: an index has no traded volume of its own. Nobody buys “the Nifty”; they buy its constituents or its futures. Plot VWAP on a raw index feed with zero volume and the indicator either breaks or silently falls back to something else.

Traders work around it two ways: use the near-month futures contract, which has real volume, or use an index series whose volume is built from the constituents. Pix Connect carries index volume aggregated from the underlying constituents, so VWAP, volume profile and order-flow tools work on the index itself.

The same logic applies to VWAP on any instrument: it is only as good as the volume under it. A snapshot feed that samples the market misses trades and their size, and the VWAP it draws is a different number from the one the desks are trading against. We explain why in what tick-by-tick market data actually means.

Five common mistakes

  • Wrong session start. A VWAP that includes the pre-open or resets at midnight is not the session VWAP. Check your platform’s trading-hours template; the NinjaTrader 8 setup guide shows where.
  • Using it on illiquid stocks. With a handful of trades, one order moves VWAP and it stops being a consensus price.
  • Treating it as a signal on its own. VWAP is a reference, not an entry rule. Combine it with structure and risk limits.
  • Ignoring corporate actions. An anchored VWAP across a split or bonus is meaningless unless prices and volumes are adjusted together — see how corporate actions break your chart.
  • Forgetting costs. A scalp that captures the distance to VWAP can still lose money after brokerage, STT and exchange charges. Check it before you trade it.

Key takeaways
  • VWAP is the volume-weighted average price since the anchor: Σ(P×V) ÷ ΣV.
  • Institutions are measured against it, which is what makes it a level the market respects.
  • Anchored VWAP starts from an event you choose: a results gap, a listing day, a swing point.
  • An index has no traded volume of its own; use futures or constituent-built index volume.
  • VWAP is only as accurate as the trades and volumes underneath it.

Questions traders ask

How is VWAP calculated?

Multiply each trade's price by its volume, add those up, and divide by the total volume traded since the anchor. For a session VWAP the anchor is the market open at 09:15.

What is the difference between VWAP and anchored VWAP?

A session VWAP resets every day at the open. An anchored VWAP starts from a point you choose, such as a results gap or a listing day, and keeps running from there.

Can I use VWAP on Nifty or Bank Nifty?

Not on a raw index feed, because an index has no traded volume of its own. Use the futures contract, or an index series whose volume is aggregated from its constituents.

Is VWAP a good intraday strategy?

VWAP is a reference level, not a strategy. Many traders use it to judge who is in control and to frame entries, combined with market structure and strict risk limits.
