NinjaTrader 8 for Indian markets: the complete setup and feature guide
NinjaTrader 8 is one of the best charting and order-flow platforms a retail trader can run, and it was built with US futures in mind. Here is how to make it behave properly on NSE, BSE and MCX.
NinjaTrader 8 gives an Indian trader the same footprint, profile and replay tools a futures desk in Chicago uses. Out of the box, though, it assumes Chicago hours, US symbols and a US data feed. A handful of settings fix that, and this guide walks through every one of them.
Why NinjaTrader 8 suits Indian traders
Most Indian traders start on a broker terminal and outgrow it quickly. Broker charts are built to place orders, not to study the auction. NinjaTrader 8 is the opposite: a desktop platform with deep charting, a strategy builder, a proper backtester and an open C# indicator framework that has grown a large ecosystem of third-party tools.
That ecosystem is the real reason to choose it. Footprint charts, Market Profile, volume profile, cumulative delta and DOM-style tools are mature on NinjaTrader in a way they are not on most platforms. The catch is that every one of those tools reads individual trades. Feed it a sampled or reconstructed stream and the most sophisticated indicator on the market will draw imbalances that never happened. We cover why in what tick-by-tick market data actually means.

What you need before you start
- A Windows PC or VPS. Pix Connect runs on Windows 10 (version 1607) or newer, on a desktop or on a cloud VPS such as AWS, Google Cloud or Azure.
- NinjaTrader 8, downloaded from NinjaTrader’s own website. It is free to use for charting, backtesting and simulation; check NinjaTrader’s site for its current licence terms if you plan to trade through it.
- A live Indian data feed that connects to NinjaTrader 8. Pix Connect connects to NinjaTrader 8 directly — no TA Extension or other bridge in between — and a 5-day free trial is enough to complete this whole guide.
- A plan with the segments you trade. Plans are priced per segment (NSE cash, F&O, MCX and so on). Compare them on the pricing page; order flow is unlocked on Elite and above.
Setup in seven steps
The whole sequence takes about twenty minutes the first time. If anything does not match what you see, the NinjaTrader 8 knowledge-base guides walk through each screen, and our team will happily do it with you over a remote session.
- Install NinjaTrader 8
Install it with default settings and open it once so it creates its folders. Close it again before the next step.
- Start your trial and note your credentials
Register for the free trial. The trial email carries the user ID and password the data client will ask for.
- Install Pix Connect
Download Pix Connect v3 or v4 from the downloads page, install it, and sign in with the credentials from your email. Leave it running: it is the bridge between the exchange feed and your charts.
- Connect NinjaTrader to the feed
Open NinjaTrader 8 and connect to the Accelpix data connection from the Control Center, as shown in the knowledge-base guide. A green connection status means ticks are flowing.
- Set up Indian trading hours
Create or select trading-hours templates for the sessions you trade (NSE equity and F&O, MCX). This step decides whether your sessions, daily bars and profiles are correct — see the next section.
- Open a chart in the right symbol format
Use the Accelpix symbol for the contract or the continuous series you want. The symbols format guide lists the patterns for stocks, indices, futures and options.
- Load history, then add indicators
Right-click the chart to reload historical data, check that today’s session joins cleanly onto history, then add the indicators you need. For order-flow tools, switch on Tick Replay first.
Indian sessions: the setting that breaks everything
NinjaTrader decides where a day starts and ends from the trading-hours template attached to each instrument. Leave a US template on an NSE contract and every daily bar, every session VWAP, every opening range and every Market Profile will be cut at the wrong time — silently. Nothing errors; the numbers are simply wrong.
| Market | Normal session (IST) | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| NSE / BSE equity and F&O | 09:15 – 15:30 | Pre-open from 09:00 sets the open price; keep it out of intraday studies unless you want it |
| MCX commodities | 09:00 – 23:30 or 23:55 | The evening close shifts with US daylight saving; one template per season, or a template that follows the exchange calendar |
| Currency derivatives | 09:00 – 17:00 | Cross-currency contracts may differ; check the exchange calendar |
Add the exchange holidays to each template too, so a holiday is not drawn as a flat day. The full session map, including the call auction and the post-close window, is in our NSE, BSE, MCX and NCDEX trading hours guide.
Symbols, expiries and continuous contracts
Indian derivatives expire every week or month, which gives NinjaTrader a new instrument to load each time. There are two ways to chart them, and you usually want both.
- A specific contract (for example
TCSJUL19) is what you trade. Its open interest and volume belong to that contract alone. - A continuous series (for example
TCS_I) joins contracts end to end so a chart can span months or years. It is what you backtest and draw long-term levels on.
Pix Connect carries both, side by side, with price and open interest adjusted together across splits and bonuses. Most feeds adjust price and leave OI raw, which quietly breaks every open-interest study across a contract change; we explain the mechanics in how corporate actions break your chart and the number most Indian traders misread.
Tick Replay and order flow
On live data, an order-flow indicator sees every trade as it arrives. On historical bars it normally sees only the finished bar — open, high, low, close and volume — and has to guess what happened inside. Tick Replay fixes that: NinjaTrader replays the stored ticks through the indicator so history is drawn exactly as it would have been live.
- Enable it once under Tools › Options › Market data (“Show Tick Replay”), then tick it on each chart’s data series.
- Tick Replay needs tick history. Plans carry up to thirty days of ticks and a hundred and twenty days of one-minute bars, on top of up to fifteen years of end-of-day data.
- It is heavier on memory. Replay the days you need rather than months at a time.
For what a footprint actually shows once it is running, read order flow and footprint charts: what is inside the candle.
Indicators worth adding
Every Pix Connect plan includes four commercial indicators for NinjaTrader 8 at no extra cost: Market Profile (TPO), Volume Profile, Volume Flexible and Basic Order Flow. They cover most of what a discretionary trader needs to read value areas and who is in control of a bar.

Mirra AI Advance Market Profile and Order Flow
When the free tools are not enough: tick-precise VPOC with naked POC memory, value area and initial balance anchored to the real session open, footprint with absorption and trapped-trader detection, and paired scanners that run the same maths across a watchlist. Elite plans and above get preferential pricing.
If you watch open interest on your charts, the optional Pix OI for NinjaTrader 8 plots it as an indicator. For the theory behind the profile tools, our new guide to Market Profile and TPO charts starts from first principles.
- NinjaTrader 8 is worth it for footprint, profile and backtesting — but only on a true tick feed.
- Pix Connect connects to NinjaTrader 8 directly; no bridge software is needed.
- Wrong trading-hours templates break sessions, VWAP and profiles without any error. Set them first.
- Chart the contract you trade and the continuous series you test on, with OI adjusted alongside price.
- Switch on Tick Replay before you judge any order-flow tool on historical bars.
Questions traders ask
Can I use NinjaTrader 8 for NSE and MCX data?
Yes. NinjaTrader 8 charts any market its data connection supplies. With an Indian vendor feed such as Pix Connect it shows NSE, BSE and MCX instruments with tick-by-tick data, as long as you attach Indian trading-hours templates to them.
Do I need the TA Extension for NinjaTrader 8?
No. NinjaTrader 8 connects to Pix Connect directly. The TA Extension is only needed for platforms such as MultiCharts, MetaStock and Advanced GET.
Is NinjaTrader 8 free?
NinjaTrader is free to download and use for charting, backtesting and simulation. Check NinjaTrader's website for its current licence terms if you want to trade live through it. Market data is a separate subscription.
Why do my order-flow indicators look different on historical bars?
Without Tick Replay, an indicator only sees completed historical bars and has to estimate what happened inside them. Turn on Tick Replay so stored ticks are replayed through the indicator.
