Diwali brings the one trading session of the year that people take part in for luck as much as for profit. In 2026 Muhurat Trading falls on Sunday 8 November, and once again it runs in the afternoon. Here is every window for every segment on NSE, BSE and MCX, in one place.

Muhurat Trading 2026 at a glance
Muhurat Trading is the one-hour symbolic session the Indian exchanges hold on Diwali, at an auspicious time, to open the new Hindu accounting year. This year Lakshmi Puja falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, and the session opens Samvat 2083. As in 2025, it runs in the afternoon rather than the evening.
It is a real session, not a demonstration. Orders are matched, trades are settled in the normal way, and margins, brokerage, STT and stamp duty apply exactly as on any other day. Volumes are usually thin and many participants buy a token quantity for luck, so liquidity in less-traded names can be patchy.
NSE & BSE: cash market (equity)
NSE and BSE run the same timetable. The structure mirrors a normal day — block deals, a pre-open call auction, continuous trading, the closing auction and a post-close window — compressed into the afternoon.

Derivatives keep trading for ten minutes after the cash market closes, the same offset as a normal day. One practical point for option traders: Tuesday 10 November is a trading holiday, and an expiry that falls on a holiday moves to the previous trading day. Gold and silver are the traditional Diwali buys, and Muhurat Trading is when many commodity traders place them. Because the session runs in the Indian afternoon, international bullion is still in its Asian and early European trade — so MCX prices track the global market live rather than gapping at the open.

A pre-session checklist
- Run the NT8 session update if you chart on NinjaTrader 8, then restart the platform.
- Start Pix Connect and log in by 1:45 pm, so the feed is connected well before the 2:05 pm pre-open.
- Check your broker’s Muhurat-day rules: some cut intraday leverage or square off intraday positions earlier than the exchange close.
- Plan the size of the trade before the bell — thin books can fill far from the last price, so prefer limit orders.
- Check the expiry for the holiday week: Tuesday 10 November is closed, so that week’s Nifty weekly expiry moves to an earlier trading day.
- Price the round trip, including STT and stamp duty, before you place a token buy.
